A support group for men with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire has been such a success that it has won funding for a second term.
The group, run at Beechwood Court in Sutton-in-Ashfield, by LHA Support Services, is aimed at men aged 18 and upwards who need support with developing life skills. The men are recruited from referrals from health practitioners and social services.
Initially the group ran from May to December last year but it was such a hit with service users that a second course of sessions is now being funded up until July by Mansfield and Ashfield District Primary Care Trust.
Subjects covered in the sessions include behavioural issues, healthy eating, sexual health, appropriate relationships, hygiene and how to use public transport.
At the start of the group, the men themselves set guidelines for what they expect from one another – examples from the current group include no bullying, no shouting, listening to everyone’s opinion and practising good hygiene. Everyone signs the guidelines and pledges to support one another in their goals.
Dave Wint, Assistant Community Manager, who is one of the co-facilitators for the group, said: “It is wonderful to see the transformation in the men. The biggest difference is in their self-esteem and confidence. It makes it all worthwhile.
“Some of them have never used public transport before and by the end of the course were able to catch a bus and come along to the sessions on their own. The pride the men felt in achieving that was fantastic to see.”
The group also chooses a selection of fun activities such as bowling, going on train journeys and swimming and these are interspersed with the learning sessions.
“We try to make it fun for everyone so they enjoy coming to the sessions and enjoy learning new life skills,” added Dave.
The sessions run every Tuesday from 1-3pm. Referrals are always welcome.
