Young homeless people in Sleaford are getting in shape and improving their health and fitness thanks to a local gym.
Harpers at Sleaford Leisure Centre in Eastbanks has teamed up with Sleaford Foyer to provide up to 15 residents with free gym membership to promote healthy living among young people.
Sleaford Foyer in Eastgate, which is run by LHA Support Services, works with unemployed and homeless young people, aged 16-24. It offers them a place to live with professional support on-site to help get their lives back on track.
The offer has proved very popular with residents who have been taking advantage of the free access to the gym and swimming facilities as well as reduced rates for the five-a-side football pitch.
Michael Norbury Business Manager for Harpers at Sleaford said: “We were approached by the Foyer in October to see if we could set up a training program for their residents, and being part of the community we decided we would sponsor them with 15 free places to allow their residents full access to the gym with the addition of getting free advice on nutrition.
“It is reported that 27% of young people are clinically overweight which can lead to adult illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart issues or other complications. By giving these young adults the opportunity to learn about healthy living we hope that they will carry on looking after their fitness when they leave the Foyer.”
Sleaford Foyer resident, Jason Meadows, has been a member of the gym since July and goes four times a week without fail.
“The staff have been so helpful and put me on a training programme. I feel fitter, healthier and now I can pursue my dream of trying to get into the RAF.
“Before I started going to the health and fitness centre, I couldn’t even run for the bus. Now I can run a mile in seven minutes no problem.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at the gym for the membership. It’s made a huge difference to my life,” said Jason.
Earlier this year the Foyer secured £3,000 funding from the Foyer Federation for the first part of a three year Healthy Living project. This year focused on healthy eating, with the option to continue the project with physical exercise in year two and mental health in the final year.
Donella Clark, Project Manager at Sleaford Foyer, said: “Homeless people frequently suffer challenges with their health and that can have an impact on their ability to lead independent and successful lives.
“The aim of the project is to provide our residents with the knowledge and skills to lead healthier lives in the future. Our partnership with Harpers is a great way for them to try new ways to keep fit and find a sport they can enjoy regularly.”
Since opening in 1994, Sleaford Foyer has helped hundreds of young adults by providing a safe and pleasant living environment and a pathway to independence.
Residents typically live at the Foyer for up to two years before gaining the skills and confidence they need to move on and live more independently.
It has 14 private bedrooms with communal facilities such as bathrooms, self-catering kitchens, common room and lounge, on site professionals trained in providing care.
The foyer also offers support and advice to young people and a wide range of workshops, activities and outings designed to help develop social, personal and life skills, and improve employment prospects.
LHA Support Services is part of the LHA-ASRA Group.
